Help UNICEF Mobilize Relief Supplies For China’s Earthquake http://www.charityinchina.org/2008/05/22/help-unicef-mobilize-relief-supplies-for-chinas-earthquake/ http://www.charityinchina.org/2008/05/22/help-unicef-mobilize-relief-supplies-for-chinas-earthquake/#comments Thu, 22 May 2008 02:17:12 +0000 admin http://www.charityinchina.org/?p=41 As news of the worst earthquake to strike China in the last generation continues to trickle in from the remotest areas, UNICEF has begun to respond to the Government of China’s call for international assistance. In a disaster like this Sichuan Earthquake, it is often the children who suffer the most as they are the most vulnerable to sickness, hunger and are traumatized by what had happened.

In response, UNICEF China has mobilized on 14 May urgently needed relief supplies with immediate emphasis on health kits, tents and shelter materials and water and sanitation supplies. Over the next few weeks it is estimated that approximately US$5.3 million will be needed to fully respond to health, water, shelter, education and child protection needs. We are now requesting support to mobilize resources to meet these needs.

Sichuan is one of the poorer provinces of China possessing - particularly in the areas struck by this earthquake - a significant ethnic minority population. The total number of children in Sichuan schools is 12.2 million. The total number of children in school in the hardest hit prefectures is 2.3 million.

We need to supply to the children in the affected areas:
health/medical kits - $2,000,000
school/Earlier Childhood Care kits - $1,000,000
tents/shelter - $750,000
water/sanitation - $750,000
child protection/play materials - $500,000
monitoring/advocacy - $500,000

With your support, we will be able to respond to this crisis with these life saving supplies to more children. Please send your donation today and help us rebuild the lives of the affected children and their families. Please specify “For Children affected by Sichuan Earthquake” when making your donation.

Please accept our sincerest thanks on behalf of the children and their families who are going to benefit from your donation.

Yours truly,

Yin Yin Nwe
UNICEF Representative to China

He is what you would expect of a typical five year old boy — exuberant, talkative, inquisitive, mischievous, playful, innocent… except Yifan suffers from leukemia.

In November 2007, Yifan’s father returned home one night to find Yifan sick with a cold so he brought Yifan to the hospital for a simple checkup. When Yifan was changing, his father noticed blood on his neck and leg. The doctor suggested a blood test. The test result came as a surprise to all; Yifan’s blood indicator was abnormal, as the doctor had initially suspected. Yifan’s parents found it hard to believe, but agreed to an initial treatment. A few days later, the hospital tested the blood again. This time, the result was undeniable: acute lymphoblast leukemia. The news was devastating. With the help of doctors and friends, Yifan was transferred from his home of Ma An Shan in Anhui Province
to Shanghai Children Medical Center (1678 East Road) on November 29. Doctors diagnosed Yifan’s illness as still in its early stages and categorized it as “lower risk” that with treatment and proper care, had a greater hope of a cure. Because Yifan is only five, he has little fear of leukemia, which plays a vital role for his hopes of survival.

In Ma An Shan, Yifan, as a kindergarten child, has not yet acceded to China’s social insurance. Although his parents have commercial insurance from China Ping An, according to the terms, the maximum payment is only RMB 40,000. To maintain Yifan’s medical expenses, his parents need to raise money. The charges at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center are standard however, treating leukemia is still very costly with daily bed fees of RMB300, coupled with various types of treatment averaging RMB1,000 per day, not including any other incidental costs relating to treatment for other infections and/or complications (because children’s leukemia is not virus resistant, a minor injury may cause serious and even fatal consequences). Hence, it is necessary to closely monitor and control Yifan’s diet and health.

The doctors believe that if all goes well (that is, without any incidents and/or complications), the first phase of the treatment will take two and a half years, the first year of which will entail the most intensive treatment. Accordingly, Yifan cannot leave the hospital nor can he leave Shanghai to return to his home in Anhui. A conservative estimate of the cost of the first phase will be approximately RMB200,000.

To help Yifan and his family raise funds for Yifan’s medical expenses, we have organized a charity event at Mesa-Manifesto in Shanghai on Saturday, 29 March. The details of the event are provided below. We humbly ask for your support.

2007 Christmas Charity Drive In Shanghai http://www.charityinchina.org/2007/11/19/2007-christmas-charity-drive-in-shanghai/ http://www.charityinchina.org/2007/11/19/2007-christmas-charity-drive-in-shanghai/#comments Mon, 19 Nov 2007 03:40:21 +0000 admin http://www.charityinchina.org/2007/11/19/2007-christmas-charity-drive-at-in-shanghai/ Le Meridien She Shan Shanghai Hotel continues its Christmas charity drive throughout the festive season this year.

With an aim to help and spread love and warmth among the less fortunate, the hotel has designated the Children’s Dream Migrant School in Tianma Shan area as beneficiary of the project. Founded in 2001, Children’s Dream Migrant School is the only school of its kind in the Tianma Shan and She Shan District.

Currently the school has population of 506 migrant elementary students, from grade one to six, and just 18 teachers. Due to the families’ dire financial situation, half of the student population cannot afford to pay the RMB450 per semester fee and a majority of them cannot even afford to pay for their meals, which cost only RMB60 per month.

As the school is privately-run with limited social contacts and donations, lack of required equipment and facilities such as computers, uniforms has become a concern.

Anyone would be sincerely invited to join this community project through donations in one of the following:

1. Individual Participation
Buy any of the 4 types of teddy bears that are available in the gingerbread house located at lobby level, priced at RMB 50, 100, 300 and 500 each. Your name will be written on a paper gold star to be placed on the “Gingerbread School” brick.

2. Corporate Sponsorship
Company may join our charity drive by donating cash of RMB 5,000 or more. The donations will be recognized through the inclusion of the company logo on a broad around the “Gingerbread School”.

To celebrate this season of giving, Le Meridien She Shan is making a donation and assisting in the refurbishment of one of the classrooms to turn it into a new computer room, equipped with two to three computers plus new instruments and uniforms will be sponsored for the Trumpet and Drum Team.

For further information, kindly call Le Meridien She Shan Shanghai’s Christmas charity drive hotline at 021-5779 8249.

Let us band together to help these children keep their dreams alive.
